“The greatest business story of this generation is a design tale”

Fast-Company-October-2013

If you are a fan of anything Apple-related, have an appreciation for smart design and love a great business story, we highly recommend you check out this article which appeared in the October issue of Fast Company. The article kicks off with an interview with our Arc Collection by Zephyr designer, Robert Brunner, who founded Apples’ industrial design group and is also the founder of Ammunition and the designer of the Beats by Dre headphones.

“I sometimes joke that when I die, my tombstone will say, ‘Here lies the guy who hired Jonathan Ive.'” -Brunner

Fast Company takes a look at the oral history of Apple’s design by exploring the people who helped create it… “What we found is that the greatest business story of the past two decades–how Apple used design to rise from near bankruptcy to become the most valuable company in the world–is completely misunderstood.” -Max Chafkin

WestEdge Design Fair Recap

We had the opportunity to check out WestEdge last week at the Santa Monica Barker Hangar. It was pretty cool being at an airport hangar and hearing planes soar overhead! This was the first year for WestEdge so although it was a tad on the small size (in terms of exhibitors and attendees), we’re looking forward to watching this show grow over the years and hopefully exhibiting in the future.

Below is a recap of some of our favorite finds!

If you follow our Facebook or Instagram feeds, you may have already seen this ingenious product: The TopBrewer by Scanomat. This sleek brewing system is essentially turned upside down – with the brewer system cleverly hid underneath and a minimal swan neck faucet that can be built into your countertop. The system is controlled by your iPhone or iPad; an app lets you select the temperature, coffee strength, size, etc. Brilliant!

We were enamored by these designer light fixtures for the home by David Trubridge. WakaNine LLC distributes these pieces of art and recently launched the Koura 750, a new size in the Seed System family. The designer pulls inspiration from his experiences in nature, such as snorkeling over coral reefs or photographing Australian flowers.

Let us introduce you to Freddy by Irinox… the only domestic appliance that shock freezes and cooks, thaws and proofs, blast chills and heats. Freddy is the first domestic appliance that combines hot and cold functions and is designed to preserve the nutritional characteristics of food, both raw and cooked. It can also be used for cooking food previously vacuum packed with ZERO (another product by Irinox).

Smart design always catches our eye – and that was the case with these Jee-O showers from Purificare. They are freestanding showers in stainless steel that can be used outside in the garden by the pool or sauna. Maybe it’s the sleek design, or the concept of a backyard big enough for an outdoor shower (not one of the luxuries in SF!), but we really loved these products and the Danish reps that we met in their booth.

And finally, we had to round out our recap with a little appliance love… If you haven’t seen a La Cornue range in person, we highly recommend you hop over to your local dealer and check out these products. The French company launched new signature brass burners with 30 enamel and metal finishes and 12 trims. Each Château range is available in multiple oven and cooktop configurations with two types of ovens that can be specified: gas for “wet” heat (perfect for roasting) and electric for a “dry” heat (perfect for baking). In addition to the technology and power, we love the color options and intricate detail on these products. Gorgeous!
