Zephyr Hosts Exclusive Presentation with FuTung Cheng at the Pacific Design Center

This September, Zephyr welcomed members of the Los Angeles design community to the Pacific Design Center for a special Fall Market event featuring longtime design partner, FuTung Cheng.

Known throughout the industry as the “Godfather of Concrete,” Cheng captivated an audience of 50 designers with his philosophy on timeless design, the beauty of hands-on craft, and the importance of balancing luxury with conscience.

Cheng, who has collaborated with Zephyr for more than 15 years on the Cheng Collection of range hoods, brought his decades of experience and perspective to the stage. For over 30 years, he has created modernist concrete masterpieces that have redefined the material’s possibilities, earning him recognition from the American Institute of Architects as one of the few non-architects to ever receive such distinction.

During the presentation, Cheng shared personal stories from his career, beginning with his own home — an ongoing project that has evolved over the course of three decades — and extending to the striking concrete temples he has created for clients. He spoke about concrete as a naturally fire-resistant material and demonstrated how it can be transformed into sustainable, elegant forms that both honor nature and endure for generations. His reflections revealed not only technical mastery but also a respect for the artistry of craft.

Cheng also highlighted his Cheng Collection line of designer range hoods created in collaboration with Zephyr. He explained how each design reflects his philosophy of blending form and function, turning utilitarian pieces into architectural focal points for the kitchen. The Trapeze, with its bold sculptural lines, and the Okeanito, inspired by the flow of ocean waves, were among the hoods he featured. Both illustrate his approach to craftsmanship and materiality, offering homeowners and designers products that are not only high-performing but also works of art.

It was a special moment to have his older brother, filmmaker Fu-Ding Cheng, there to record the presentation. The presence of family added a personal note to the day and made the event even more memorable.

Following the talk, guests gathered for a lively reception. Chef Shiaya Evans prepared a selection of bites that paired perfectly with light refreshments, allowing attendees to mingle, exchange ideas, and connect with both Cheng and the Zephyr marketing team. Designers also had the chance to learn more about the upcoming Zephyr Designer Retreat, an exclusive program dedicated to fostering community, creativity, and inspiration within the design industry.
