We were honored to be included in the 2023 Pasadena Showcase House in partnership with Interior Designer Rydhima Brar from R/terior Studio. Continue reading for Rydhima’s design inspiration and her approach to the custom bar featuring the new Presrv™ Kegerator & Beverage Cooler and Outdoor Beverage Cooler.
How did you approach the starting point for your design?
There are interiors that inspire you the minute they are presented as a blank canvas and this Garden Room & Terrace exuded that feeling from the moment I walked in. I envisioned this space to be a place to host, an ideal spot to commune surrounded by nature all year round. I imagined this space to be one where during the day you could read a book with your early morning coffee and bask in the warm sun, then grab a glass of wine or pint of beer at the beautiful outdoor bar. When it comes to my approach, it starts with that first instinct that I get when I walk into any space – the picture that I see in my mind. Intuition and psychology play a huge part in my design process. Finding balance in many different perspectives and influences is key to a successful project. I wanted to experiment with colors, patterns, uniquely new and refurbished furniture that reflect a modern sensibility without completely ignoring the formality of the home’s architecture.
What was your inspiration for the space?
I wanted to transport guests to a resort in Marrakech or a sexy lounge in Paris. The history and architecture of the house allowed me to bring in a fresh look without making any structural or architectural changes. The furnishings and lighting span styles and eras, from custom crafted contemporary pieces to avant garde, and dramatic forms in exuberant colors, celebrating the love of art and culture. The resulting design has been an extremely sophisticated mélange of styles from art deco to European mid-century masters and contemporary emerging artists and furniture makers.
Do you have a favorite vignette or design feature within the space?
The Outdoor Bar, which is a custom design in collaboration with Bones Studio out of South Carolina is my favorite area. The details of the bar combined with the Zephyr Outdoor appliances make it a memorable moment. Secondly, the corner with Jason Mizrahi’s Belcanto Chair, Eric Boyers Sculpture paired with the Peony lighting by Studio M.
Why did you select the Presrv Kegerator & Beverage Cooler for the Outdoor Bar?
It was important to have the best quality outdoor appliances in the bar that were also sleek and complemented the space. The Zephyr outdoor appliances contributed a modern sense of style. I love the idea of having a combination of a Beverage Cooler on one side for storing white wine, liquor, or sparkling water and a Kegerator on the other side for cold beer on tap. The space is all about creating a comfortable and welcoming environment and what better way to do that than to have cold drinks on hand during those hot summer days.
What have been some of the more interesting challenges throughout the project?
With the Garden Room – the main challenge I had was the wall treatment. The walls have a lot of moldings – I mean a lot! And some of them are not symmetrical. I did not want to remove them as it is a key feature throughout this home – especially the adjacent formal living room and dining room. So I wanted to keep it but camouflage it. I decided to paint it all in one tone and add wallpaper only in the ‘framed’ section of the walls to draw your eyes upwards and to those areas.
What colors or themes did you notice throughout the Pasadena Showcase House?
The overall design of the house is ‘transitional modern’. The trend in this case, is leaning more towards muted colors that make the space cohesive – but there are areas which pop and tell beautiful stories. Most of the designers have beautiful storytelling moments within their spaces which is a common link amongst us.
